Well, it’s a new year, and I’m happy to say I’ll be starting it off with a gig down in Cornwall, performing in a line-up selected by the brilliant purveyor of fine words that is Telltales.

Telltales at the Hall for Cornwall looks set to be a powerful evening full of drama and delight. Bringing you 8 writers, each with their own take on ‘This Mortal Coil’ – so expect life’s stresses, being human, making mistakes, mortality, death, birth and everything between!

The Telltales MicrophoneThere’s an eclectic line-up with a little bit of something for everybody, including  sci-fi writer Ben Power; rising talent Aaron Kent; award-winning writer Felicity Notley and her story The FootMy Cornwall competition winner Douglas Bence who’ll be sharing his story An Unexpected Guest; lots more from Nic Robey, Mary Mcstecky, and Alan Robinson; and a 5-minute performance poem from me, called This is not my story.

This event is part of the Hall for Cornwall’s series of ‘Platform Events’ that take place in their Assembly Rooms. Tickets are free, but seats are limited to just 80 and must be booked in advance as when we last checked there were only about 10 left. So…

29th December – Falmouth – Jacob’s Ladder Inn

The refrigerator-inspired-collective is back! Bringing you an inappropriately warm and intimate evening of words and song, midway between Christmas and New Year.

This time Elliott Sutcliffe and I are joined by the fantastic and always entertaining poet, Mac Dunlop, and the only man who can make the alphabet simultaneously funny and romantic Kieran Haynes and his owl Windom.

It’s Mac’s birthday the day before, so come along and let’s help him celebrate by seeing how much Guinness he can drink before he falls down.

Jacob’s Ladder Inn, 29th December, 9pm.

15th December – Falmouth – Finn McCouls

This is going to be the first in a series of ‘gigs with musicians’ at which I will be performing poetry to unsuspecting pub audiences. When I say unsuspecting, we are of course advertising the events, but still I can guarantee that there will be people who are very surprised to have somebody talking at them instead of playing them sweet soulful music. I only hope they like it… and if they don’t, that they either keep their disappointment to themselves or express it with nice soft things like rotten tomatoes,  rather than hard things, like root vegetables!

We’ve given our new collective a name that manages to evoke some kind of generic inbreeding having occurred between the cult of Twee and Death Metal. We are, of course, neither very twee nor very metal but are employing the name in an ironic way, yikr! Also, it was written in magnetic words on my fridge and we thought it sounded epic.*

Nick Jarvis with Massive Dragon Solace at Finn McCouls Falmouth, Poster

So, come to Finn McCouls on Thursday and witness the first evening hosted by Massive Dragon Solace, featuring: Elliott Sutcliffe – playing his newer material which brings out a much softer and  more wistful side in his songwriting; Will Rothwell – with his beautiful finger-picking guitar style; and myself, performing amongst other things, a new poem called The 12 (Urban Dictionary) Days of Christmas, in which I find 12 different ways of mentioning teabagging.

Incidentally,  I’m going to post this poem onto my facebook page a verse at a time over the 12 days of crimbo, so head over there now to ‘like‘ it if you want to receive these updates.

*can you tell I’ve been reading the urban dictionary of late?!
